IT, or information technology, refers to the use of computers to manage information. The ultimate vision for the NHS is, and has always been, a patient-led healthcare service that gives the service user more control over their health and care. To this end, NHS Connecting for Health has come into being. This is a national programme for IT within the NHS aiming to increase communication between departments, making information sharing less complicated. IT roles within the NHS are varied and can be found in hospitals, primary care trusts (PCTs), or even at a local level in GP practices.
